MAINE PSS EDUCATION

Introduction
Welcome to the Personal Support Specialists (PSS) Student Training Program. Our comprehensive course is thoughtfully designed to meet the minimum educational criteria required for PSS in the State of Maine. At this training program, we focus on equipping students with foundational skills, knowledge, and values essential for success in the healthcare fields. As a PSS, you will play a crucial role in assisting individuals in the community and healthcare settings, offering a diverse range of services, skills, and supports. Our goal is to ensure you are well-prepared to provide direct support to consumers, empowering them to lead fulfilling lives with dignity and compassion. Successful completion of this course will qualify you to serve in various settings, authorized by Statute and rule.
Scope of Training
As you embark on your journey as a Personal Support Specialist, it is essential to understand the distinctions between PSS and Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs). Unlike CNAs, who are clinical personnel, PSSs work under the guidance of facility administrators and are not part of the clinical staff. Throughout this course, you will be introduced to a CNA textbook, which may serve as a stepping stone for CNA training in the future. However, it's crucial to recognize that your scope of training is specific to the skills and procedures outlined in your job description and those taught in this program. As a PSS, you are legally obligated to adhere to your designated role and refrain from performing tasks beyond your authorized responsibilities.

Course Overview
Your journey as a Personal Support Specialist will encompass a comprehensive and engaging training program. The course comprises 13 thoughtfully designed online modules, each accompanied by a quiz to assess your understanding. Beyond the online component, our training also includes live skills demonstrations, providing hands-on experience to reinforce your learning. The curriculum has been meticulously crafted to align with the requirements set forth by the Maine State Department of Health and Human Services for PSS training. While not a mandatory requirement, the Lippincott Textbook for Nursing Assistants, A Humanistic Approach to Caregiving, serves as a valuable reference material throughout the training. Both physical and digital copies of the textbook are available for purchase, offering additional resources to enhance your learning experience.
